Dubbed as the Gateway to the Northern Philippines, Bulacan is primarily linked with Metro Manila and key provinces in Luzon. Although in the last few years, Bulacan became the center of waterparks, the province is primarily founded on history, culture, and religion. Some of the country’s oldest churches are found here, mostly built with Baroque architecture. Of course, Barasoain Church is the most popular being one of the most important religious buildings in the Philippines. It is the site of the First Philippine Congress (Malolos Congress). Bulacan is home to some of the most prominent names recognized as National Artists of the Philippines such as Levi Celerio, Amado V. Hernandez, Honorata Atang dela Rama and Virgilio S. Almario. Some of the greatest literary works are written here thus the province is considered as one of the seats of the Tagalog language. The locals take their pyrotechnics technology seriously. Every year, the traders introduce new variations, often better than the last ones. As early as November, people flock to Bocaue and neighboring towns to obtain their fireworks. The artistry of Bulakenyos is also evident in their food. Bulacan is also known for its milky pastillas and its pabalat or borlas de pastillas. The delicacy is presented in colorful and intricately designed wrappers, which makes it perfect as pasalubong or gift to loved ones.
